I ended up buying the youcanic unit from Walmart online as it has free returns. It seems to work fine, but an interesting thing I noticed (as I work in IT) is the app for the software is acting as the launcher, so you can’t use other apps very easy (no home, switch app buttons). Another very interesting thing is the app is called YOUCANIC, but if I look in the Android appdata it’s actually stored in a folder called Foxwelltech… turns out Foxwell is another maker of scanners. In called Youcanic’s support about it, and I was told “we make the unit” which at best means it’s a license deal with Foxwell, and at worst it’s them pirating the Foxwell app, putting their icon on it, and re-selling it. either way they outright lied to me as they do NOT make the scanner, it’s clearly made by Foxwell, whether Foxwell knows it or not. I am going to buy the Foxwell unit (NT809BT) which appears to be the same thing except no camera in the back for $200 less and test it out. All that said, and it does work. bi-directional commands mostly work. It’s very slow and the app semi-frequently crashes and makes you start over. I wouldn’t spend $500 on this, but it’s not a “scam” but a blatant knockoff of another companies software. I also question the lifetime updates. The Foxwell is 3 years of updates, and unless youcanic gets all the updates themself, you are likely communicating with Foxwell’s update servers not youcanic which if I had to guess will not be a brand in 3 years and you will be stuck with no updates anyways (which should be ok as the unit works withing being connected to wifi, assuming there isnt a timebomb using a date in the future in the software which is very well possible).
